Saskatchewan gets dose of winter

Nov 12, 2014 | 11:07 AM

Saskatchewan is getting a good dose of cold and snow this week, even though winter is still about five and a half weeks from officially kicking in.

Terri Lang with Environment Canada said we were spoiled for a while in September, and October with above normal temperatures, but clearly that couldn’t last. The current cold spell came gradually, she said.

“This one was sort of getting colder, and day by day it deepened. We got a little bit of snow with it,” Lang said.

Lang noted at least we’ve been able to ease into winter this time around.

“Usually with the first blast of winter, it’s usually associated with what we call an Alberta Clipper, and we usually get two to five centimetres with it. It whistles on through, and then there’s this huge blast, with blizzard conditions, and then we’re really in the deep freeze,” Lang said.

Temperatures are actually running about 10 degrees colder than normal for this time of year in Saskatchewan. It’ll likely stay that way into next week before rebounding a bit.
