Restorative Justice Conference

Nov 3, 2014 | 10:36 AM

Shannon Moroney, author of the acclaimed best-selling memoir, Through the Glass, will be speaking in Prince Albert, SK, at an event in honour of National Restorative
Justice Week on Monday, November 17th, 2014 at 10am.

Her presentation, “Through the Glass: One Woman’s Pursuit of Justice, Forgiveness, and Healing,” will lead the audience
through her the ordeal of her husband’s arrest, trial and sentencing and offer the seldom heard viewpoint of an offender’s spouse.

In 2005, Shannon’s life was shattered by the sudden violent crimes of her newly-wed husband,
Jason Staples. While she was away at a conference, a police officer arrived at her hotel room
door with the news that Jason was in custody after calling 9-1-1 and confessing to the brutal
sexual assault of two women customers at his workplace. He then kidnapped them to the home
he shared with Shannon.

In the aftermath of these crimes, Shannon dealt with a heavy burden of grief, the stress and
publicity of a major criminal investigation, and the painful stigma of guilt-by-association, all
while attempting to understand what had made Jason turn to such violence.

Through the Looking Glass is an impassioned, harrowing and ultimately hopeful story of one
woman’s pursuit of justice, forgiveness and healing. In this intimate and gripping journey into
prisons, courtrooms and the human heart, Shannon reveals the far-reaching impact of Jason’s
crimes, the agonizing choices faced by the loved ones of offenders and the implicit dangers of
correctional systems and societies that prioritize punishment over rehabilitation, and victimhood
over recovery.

Shannon currently lives in Toronto, where she is re-married and the mother of twins. She is
involved with the community-based organization Leave Out Violence (LOVE) and the
International Forgiveness Project. She shares her story around the world.
