Halloween party fills streets of P.A.

On Friday night, the streets of Prince Albert were filled with children and families as they took part in the Haunted Street Family Trick-or-Treat Party.

This was the first time the city has offered an event like this, said Dawn Krohn, the assistant director for the French-Canadian Society.

Krohn said the Halloween party is one of the most unique events they have been involved with.

“We’ve hosted a lot of events but this is the first time that we’ve been lucky enough to partner with Prince Albert Downtown,” Krohn said. “There’s never been a family Halloween event right in Prince Albert before.”

Krohn said in Prince Albert there are haunted houses and musical events geared towards older children. She even mentioned that there are family-friendly Halloween events outside of Prince Albert.

However, Krohn said “we really wanted to do something for the city of Prince Albert.”

The idea of the party was borne out of a discussion about the Prince Albert Downtown Street Fair.

“It’s sad that there’s no street fair type event any other time, you know, other than the middle of summer,” said Krohn.

According to Krohn, the society’s director, Richard Grenier, really enjoys events where families can have fun together.

“Halloween is for children but most kids nowadays do go out with their parents,” said Krohn. “This [the Halloween party] is sort of half way between a Halloween party for children and a trick-or-treating event, which is what a lot of kids identify Halloween as being.”

Besides the intent of showing children a fun and safe time on Halloween, Krohn said gatherings like these are important for the revitalization of the downtown area.

“You know, bringing more people to what I think is just a beautiful place,” she said.

A total of 21 businesses took part in the event, including the Prince Albert Multicultural Centre, which encouraged people to speak either Spanish or Cree for a treat.

Each business added their own personality into the party but Krohn said they didn’t forget to include basic games such as, pin the boo on the ghost and a ring toss using glow sticks.
