Students scare hunger for Halloween

Students in Prince Albert are taking part in a massive food drive this Halloween as part of the We Scare Hunger campaign.

The campaign, an initiative of Free the Children, gets students involved in collecting food for food banks across the world.

This is Arthur Pechey School’s second year taking part in the food drive.  As of Thursday afternoon, the students had been able to collect over 940 items after nearly two weeks.  The food they collected will all be given to the Prince Albert Share-A-Meal Food Bank on Halloween.

“We really just value the fact that there’s a lot of people that don’t have what we do and we need to try and change the world so that everybody can be equal,” said Rowen Greene, president of the Student Leadership Council (SLC).

Kimberly Kozun, a teacher involved with the campaign, said there has been support from not only teachers and students but they have also had community members bring in boxes of food.

“[It] just shows that the word is being spread and people are talking about it,” she said.

Morgan Christian, a Grade 8 student and member of the SLC said it means a lot to be a part of the campaign.

“Just think if you didn’t have all of the opportunities that you have now and just getting all those donations from us to them would probably mean a lot,” he said.

Kozun said there are many initiatives throughout the year that get the students more involved.

“It’s just growing bigger and bigger so the students are engaged and they’re empowered and they’re coming up with new ideas that we haven’t thought of just in different ways that we can contribute to local or global issues,” she said.

She said in regards to the food drive, they were hoping to take part in a supper at the food bank to reach out to the community another way.

Brianna Paradis, Grade 7 student and member of the SLC added that she’s happy help out with the food drive.

“[It] feels good to help people who don’t have things that we take for granted to help them get the things that we do so we all have the same things,” she said.
