Trial delayed for man accused of animal abuse

A local man facing allegations of animal abuse will see his case go to a one-day trial in November.

Ryan Funk was not in a Prince Albert Provincial Court room on Monday afternoon for a scheduled court appearance.

Funk’s previously scheduled trial date was moved to Monday, but his lawyer, Greg Chovin, asked for an adjournment, which was granted.

Members of the Prince Albert SPCA filled a back row in the court room and silently filed out after the judge agreed to the adjournment.

In June, Funk entered not guilty pleas through his lawyer for a Criminal Code charge of causing unnecessary injury or suffering to an animal. As well as an Animal Protection Act violation of causing an animal to be in distress.

In 2013, the SPCA said it received a complaint about an incident of alleged animal abuse and that a dog had died. The SPCA’s animal protection officers investigated and turned over its findings to the RCMP. Funk was later charged.

His new trial date is set for Nov. 13.
