Tim Bozon returns to RUH after meningitis recovery

Tim Bozon has returned to Saskatoon to say “thank you” to the doctors who saved his life.

Following a 4-2 win over the Saskatoon Blades on March 1, the Kootenay Ice forward was admitted to Royal University Hospital and diagnosed with a rare form of meningitis. Bozon was in critical condition, and would spend most of his four-week hospital stay in a medically-induced coma.

“It was as serious as you can be,” neurologist Dr. Gary Hunter recalled, “there wasn’t any room for worsening at some stages.”

Bozon went on to make a full recovery, and left RUH on March 28.  On Monday, he returned to reunite with the medical staff who helped in his recovery.

“I think it was really important for me to come back and say thank you to the people that helped me and saved my life,” Bozon said. “It’s something that I’m never going to forget, and it’s important for me to move on too. To come back here, it was great.”

Since his release from hospital, Bozon has returned to the ice as a member of the French national team, and participated in the main training camp for the Montreal Canadiens.

“We all had faith that he would get to this point, and he has proven us right,” Hunter said. “He deserves all the credit for the work he has put in.”

Hunter and Bozon will be flanked by a group of medical professionals during a special ceremony at Sasktel Centre on Wednesday. Both will drop the ceremonial puck before the Saskatoon Blades play the Kootenay Ice once again.

“I’m sure its going to be emotional,” Bozon said. “Just the fact of being in Saskatoon, it’s emotional, it was so tough for me. But it’s something that’s going to help me move on.”

Bozon is not on the roster for Wednesday’s game. He is currently recovering from a lower-body injury.
