Police investigating spate of weekend vehicle vandalism

Police in Prince Albert are investigating more than 20 incidents of vehicle vandalism and thefts that all took place this past weekend.

Most of the damaged vehicles were in the West Hill and West Flat neighbourhoods. Thieves stole coins and electronics from the vehicles.

On Monday, Sgt. Brandon Mudry said that with the nice weather, there’s been more foot traffic at night than there normally would be at this time of the year.

“I know lots of these have been coming in in the early mornings, so we’re seeing them happen overnight, as opposed to daytime,” he said.

While police are asking drivers to remove their valuables from their vehicles and ensure their doors and windows are locked, Mudry said that doors and windows weren’t left unlocked in all of the cases.

“We’ve seen some of them damaging vehicles to gain entrance,” he added.

In one case early on Monday morning, police were called to the unit block of13th Street East after they received a complaint of a male breaking into vehicles. When officers got to the scene,  they saw the male trying to flee. They took him into custody.

Jagger the K9 was involved in tracking from the damage to the police vehicle that had the suspect inside, according to police.

A 17-year-old male now faces two counts of mischief and one charge related to carrying a concealed weapon.

In another incident, on Sunday at 4:25 a.m., police went to the 3400 block of Jordan Drive after they received a complaint about people who were checking out vehicles. A witness at the scene told officers that three people were looking into five cars on the block.

The witness told the police the trio headed down a footpath to another block, and when the officer went to the path and identified that they were police, the suspects tried to flee.

One person was caught, and with Jagger’s help, the other two were soon taken into custody too. According to police, they found property related to the offence on the suspects.

Three men, 19, 20 and 23, face mischief charges. The 20-year-old man is also facing two breach of probation charges and a single count of breach of undertaking.
