Community mailbox changes still a year away for Sask.

Oct 21, 2014 | 12:18 PM

As thousands of people across Canada lose door-to-door mail delivery, communities in Saskatchewan still have at least a year to wait.

“I certainly would love to give a more specific time line, but we have not started the work in Saskatchewan,” Canada Post spokesperson Anick Losier said, adding they have just begun announcing the communities which will be impacted at the end of 2015.

Last February, Canada Post announced the first 11 communities to lose door-to-door service starting this fall. Monday was the first day those communities were required to use the replacement community mailboxes.

It marks the first phase of a five-year program that will impact around five million addresses in Canada.

“For people in Saskatchewan who are wondering, the minute we do start the work it starts with three things,” Losier said.

First Canada Post will meet with the mayor of the community then they will meet with their own employees. The final step is to drop a mail and information kit to the people who are directly affected by the changes.

“That signals the beginning of the process,” Losier said. “It’s almost like a year long process from when we tell residents that they are next on the list to it becoming reality.”

Throughout that year Canada Post will encourage people to fill out a survey and questionnaire to find out how best to install the community mailboxes.

The communities impacted by the end of 2015 will be informed by the end of this year. Losier could not say if any were in Saskatchewan.
