Prud’homme gas fire evacuees return home

Oct 20, 2014 | 6:10 AM

Thirteen people who were evacuated because of a natural gas fire near Prud’homme have been allowed to return home.

The area was deemed safe following two days of testing on a new wellhead, which was installed Friday night. The installation stopped the fire, which lit up the prairie sky for the better part of a week, but a two-kilometre perimeter remained in place until late Sunday.

SaskEnergy spokesperson Dave Burdeniuk said it wasn’t necessary to seal the cavern deeper down, since the new wellhead met all the required safety specifications.

An investigation into the cause of the Oct. 12 explosion is now underway.
