Creighton death inquest looks into in-custody seizure

Monday marks the first day of an in-depth look into the circumstances surrounding the death of Roderick Sewap.

The 43-year-old man died in August of 2013, six days after his arrest in Denare Beach.

The cause of that arrest hasn’t been disclosed yet, but the public inquest in Creighton will delve into those details.

From Monday to Friday the coroner’s jury will hear witnesses speak about when and how Roderick died.

So far the government is only sharing that a day after his arrest Sewap had a seizure and an ambulance took him to hospital. He was transferred to Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital and died on Aug. 31, 2013.

By the end of the week they’ll collect recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

A coroner’s inquest is called when an inmate in jail or a correctional facility dies and the coroner is not satisfied the person’s death was entirely due to natural causes and was not preventable.

Creighton is near Flin Flon in northern Saskatchewan, along the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border.

The inquest is taking place at the Prospector Inn in Creighton.
