Oct 18, 2014 | 9:31 AM

A 20-year-old man in the centre of a 13-hour standoff in Saskatoon this summer has been sentenced to two years in jail.

Robert Keith Roy Belley pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Thursday to careless use of a firearm and possession of an unauthorized firearm in connection to a standoff on Aug. 12.

Early that morning, police received a call from a man who had barricaded himself inside the basement of a home in the 100 block of Avenue O South. He told police he had a gun and was threatening to harm himself.

Numerous shots were reportedly fired inside the home, but police said nobody was hurt.

Belley’s first court appearance was adjourned to request a three-day mental health assessment. Bystanders at the scene of the standoff who claimed to know the man told reporters that he has a lengthy history of serious mental health problems.
