Round Table Discussion With Federal Minister of State – Finance

The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce is coordinating a roundtable discussion with Kevin Sorenson, Federal Minister of State- Finance on Friday Oct. 17/20914 starting at 3:00 pm.

Minister Sorenson will provide an update on the economy, financial literacy initiatives and the federal government’s plan to get back to a balanced budget. Minister Sorenson will consult local businesses on how we can further reduce red tape, enhance private sector growth, break down internal trade barriers and improve overall competitiveness.

Kevin Sorenson was first elected to the House of Commons in 2000 as the Member of Parliament for the federal riding of Crowfoot.

Kevin was re-elected in the 2004 federal election with a majority of 80.21%. In January 2006 he was again re-elected, this time with a 82.5% of the vote, and in 2008 with 82%. Following the 2006 election, Kevin was elected Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. He was appointed as a Member of the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights. After the 2008 federal election he was elected as Chair of the House of Commons Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan, and then Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. In the 2011 federal election, Kevin was re-elected again with 84%.

He has served previously as the Official Opposition’s Senior Solicitor General Critic, the Associate Critic for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Deputy Critic for Justice. He has been a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights Committee, and served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

Born on November 3, 1958 and raised in Killam, Alberta, Kevin, his wife Darlene and their children Kristen and Ryan still reside on a farm within a few miles of the Sorenson family farm where his father and mother currently reside and his Grandfather began farming a century ago. Prior to first being elected, Kevin owned and operated his family farm and a small auction company.
