Firefighters put fire to bed

Oct 12, 2014 | 3:08 PM

A bed is unrecognizable after an afternoon fire behind the Carlton Park Apartments, in Prince Albert.

Firefighters were called to the grassy area beside the apartments after a bed was lit on fire and started a small grass fire.

One resident of the apartments said she witnessed the whole incident. She refused to give her name but said her and her partner were getting into their vehicle when they spotted three young children by the creek area.

“They had cardboard boxes [from what she saw] and before we knew it there was black smoke and flames flying everywhere,” she said.

The witness said her partner honked the horn at the children when they realized what was happening. She believes the children were between eight and ten years old.

The resident acted quickly, calling 911. She said after fire and police officials arrived, the kids came out of apartment Block A with an adult.

“They were walking around like this was fun,” she said.

It was important to act fast she said.

“There’s a wind today, and dry grass and if it [the fire] goes, were fifteen feet away from where the fire was with our vehicles,” she said.

The fire was put out almost immediately. Police are continuing investigation into the incident.
