Red carpet event celebrates reading

Reading was celebrated in a glamourous way at Berezowsky School in Prince Albert on Thursday.  As part of a Dressed for Success day, students dressed up in their Hollywood finest and walked the red carpet.  
“We’re really playing on the idea that everybody can be a star,” said Shannon Schlamp, a teacher at the school.

Principal Shannon McElligott said each year a goal is chosen for the students to meet.  This year, reading and comprehension was brought into the spotlight and played out by the Hollywood theme.

“We always use our data and if we feel our data is not as high as we would like it to be, then we will continue on with that goal,” she said.

As part of the day, students from kindergarten to Grade 8 strutted across the red carpet outside and into the school gym where an assembly was held.  At the assembly, a toast to reading was given and names were drawn for the opportunity to go for a limo ride.  Two people from each grade were chosen.

McElligott said the event is an opportunity to get the students involved and excited about reading.

“It’s engaging our children in learning. We want them to be engaged so they have that motivation to continue on,” she said.

Schlamp said since reading is a big part of life, they want to teach that importance to the students.

“There’s so many areas where reading is so fundamental that we just want to make sure that our kids are the best possible readers to give them the best possible futures,” she said.

The staff is happy with the large amount of support they received from parents and community members to make the event a success.

Kaela Knoke, a parent of a Grade 3 student said she comes to volunteer and help out whenever she can.

“It’s so important for [students] to learn to read and they promote reading so well here at this school that I feel it’s important to come help and show the kids the parents are into it too,” she said.

McElligott said their goal is to make sure each student has success throughout their lives.

“I truly believe that our children can be and do anything that they’d like to do and if they have those skills then they will be able to achieve it.”
