Wrong-way Hwy 1 chase ends in crash near Herbert

Oct 6, 2014 | 7:42 PM

Traffic was detoured off the Trans-Canada Highway Monday morning near Herbert after a highway chase ended in a crash.

It started with a carjacking in a Swift Current parking lot. Police said a 77-year-old woman was pulled out of her car by a 38-year-old man, who took off down Highway 1 toward Herbert. That woman was taken to hospital where she is now being treated with unknown injuries.

About 20 kilometres down the road, police started to get calls from drivers about the stolen car racing eastbound. RCMP picked up the chase near Duck Lake where the driver avoided a spike belt and started crossing the centre median several times.

Callers into News Talk Radio described the chase.

“We were in the regular lane and he was coming down the passing lane straight at us,” said Trevor, who then saw a number of police cars follow the stolen car.

Fortunately, no one from the public was hit by the car travelling the wrong way down the highway. The chase ended when the stolen car hit a hay bale and then struck an RCMP cruiser.

Another man, named Andrew, drove by the area not long after.

“I saw five cop cars and also one RCMP truck with the front end demolished,” described Andrew who passed by the area. He also saw a man being put into handcuffs as he drove by.

The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital but police have not laid any charges yet. The RCMP officer inside the damaged cruiser was also taken to hospital as a precaution and has been released.
