P.A. residents celebrate French culture

Oct 3, 2014 | 4:46 PM

Francophone residents who live in Prince Albert were recognizing their Fransaskois Flag at a ceremony at Scarrow Plaza on Friday.

The government adopted the Fransaskois Flag as a provincial emblem in 2005. The flag represents French as one of Canada’s official languages and showcases the heritage of Francophone people in the province.

According to Statistics Canada, the number of people with French as their mother tongue has increased by 7.7 per cent between 2006 and 2011 in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson said Prince Albert has a large contingency of French-speakers who have come from around the world.

“We are grateful that they have come to live, work and play in Saskatchewan, and make this their home,” said Wilson. “Francophones have contributed to the cultural, economic and social fabric of not only Prince Albert, but all of the province.”

Prince Albert is one of two Francophone communities, which is acknowledged annually by the Government of Saskatchewan. The other Fransaskois Flag raising took place in Poteix Saskatchewan on Sept. 26.

Prince Albert’s Fransaskois Flag is now proudly shown at Scarrow Plaza at 133 River Street West.
