Best Place To Have A Picnic : Little Red River Park

Only five minutes away from the City of Prince Albert, Little Red River Park serves as a great location for local families to get away and enjoy nature—even if just for an afternoon.

It is a great place to take the kids and is the best place in Prince Albert to enjoy a picnic.  It is no surprise Little Red River Park was voted as Best Park or Public Spot, Best Place To Take The Kids, and Best Place To Have A Picnic.

The park, which expands to 1,200 acres, is a great place to enjoy both summer and winter activities. In the summer the park features over a dozen picnic sites that visitors can use at no cost that are often used for family barbecues or birthday parties. There are also a variety of walking trails, the Cosmopolitan Lodge (which is open year-round) and a playground for the kids. In the winter visitors can enjoy the toboggan hill, snowshoe trails, the Kinsmen Ski Hill, and cross-country skiing.

Even if you have never visited Little Red River Park before it doesn’t take long to develop a connection to it.

Alissa Baker the new parks manager for the City said Little Red River Park is a wonderful amenity and she looks forward to helping to maintain and ensure the park’s longevity into the future. She said although she has only had a few opportunities to visit the park since moving to Prince Albert she already thinks it is a fantastic park.

“I think it is just a fantastic amenity for the city to have a park so close to the city and to have it so accessible to everyone in the community,” she said. “I think it is a really great thing for the city and certainly it winning in the categories that it did for Best of the Best awards certainly highlights this.”

In 2013 Little Red River Park was closed to the public due to extreme flooding and although that flooding has receded some damage to the park still exists. A retaining wall that runs along the River Trail for about 80 metres that helps hold up the path across a steep slope near the river was damaged and a popular pedestrian bridge still remains closed.

Baker said fixing the damage at Little Red River Park remains a priority for the City.

“We are reviewing it right now and we hope to be moving forward soon,” she said. “Looking at the flooding and the erosion that is along the Little Red River that is our highest priority from a safety stand point .”
