Best Event or Festival: Prince Albert Street Fair

Oct 1, 2014 | 6:11 PM

The Prince Albert Downtown Street Fair is a free, fun, family festival that promotes Prince Albert’s Downtown.

It’s a full day of entertainment, activities, and shopping and recently, thanks to numerous votes from community members, it is now also the Best of the Best winner for Best Community Event in Prince Albert as well as Best Event or Festival for the last two years.

Lori Bourne, Event Co-ordinator for the Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District (PADBID), describes Prince Albert’s Downtown as the heart and soul of the city.

“We have over 3,000 employees that work in the downtown area and over 300 businesses and organizations that are part of the Downtown BID,” she said.  “So we are the organization that combines it all together to show that we are the heart and soul of the city.”

The Street Fair is PADBID’s biggest event of the year, which in 2015 celebrated its 12th year.

“We want to make Prince Albert the destination place to come because we have a great downtown,” said Bourne.

“The Street Fair brings people downtown and because we close the entire Central Avenue, that is about seven blocks, everyone gets to see what is down here. You get a chance to see those unique gifts in our great downtown shops and visit our many restaurants.”

“So we open up the downtown for everyone to enjoy,” she added.

Each year, the Street Fair attracts approximately 5,000 people to the downtown area. In a good year — better yet, on a sunny day — the event can bring up to 7,000 people to Prince Albert’s Downtown core. This year, the fair had an amazing turnout with more vendors than they had ever had before.

“It’s just fantastic because the vendors are coming to me, it’s not always us going out and asking them. They are starting to come to us, which I think tells you it has become a known event,” said Bourne.

The annual Downtown Street Fair is a great event that Prince Albert families look forward to each year.

This year’s Downtown Street Fair events included sidewalk sales, pony rides, bouncy castles, live entertainment, dancers, a farmer’s market, craft vendors, food, historical skits, jugglers and stilt walkers and a magician.

Next year’s Street Fair is scheduled to take place on June 18, 2016.

Other activities PADBID helps to organize and/or support include Summer In The Square, walking tours, Christmas events and the Farmers Market.
