Tapestrama celebrates worldwide cultures

This weekend’s 39th annual Tapestrama event is about cultural acceptance and fun.

Michelle Hassler, assistant executive director of the Prince Albert Multicultural Council said this year, much like past years, they have a great line-up of musicians, local dancers, and seven different types of multi-culture food dishes and drinks.

“People can enjoy German, Persian, Pakistani, Filipino, First Nations, Ukraine, and Chinese [food],” she said.

Hassler said she encourages people to bring their children to the free event.

“I know that Saskatchewan, especially Prince Albert and area has a very cultural diversity and feeling and atmosphere,” said Hassler. “It would be nice for them to see and experience different cultures.”

Hassler said entertainers enjoy performing in Tapestrama because they have the opportunity to share culture from their country of region.

There are several returning performers, but this year’s line-up will also include a new performer named Ballet and All That Jazz.

During last year’s event, around 1,200 people shared in the festivities. Hassler said if they had that many attendees with cold weather, hopefully this year there will be even more people.

Hassler said new this year, during the Saturday night Salsa Fiesta they will provide an hour of free salsa lessons.

The finale of the event starts at 6 p.m. and includes The Goats Jazzy folk singers and the Celtic Circling Over Shannon bands.

The event is at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets for the Salsa Fiesta event on Saturday night at 8 p.m. cost $10 in advance and $15 at the doors.
