UPDATE: Raiders get their Guard up; promote him to asst. coach

Sep 25, 2014 | 10:27 AM

The Prince Albert Raiders didn’t have to go far to find a replacement for Tim Leonard.

They promoted Kelly Guard to fill in at the full-time assistant coaching position that was left vacant Wednesday when Leonard resigned.

Guard has been with the Raiders for the past two years as a goaltending/strength and conditioning coach.

Promoting Guard to fill the empty assistant coaching spot was a very handy move for Raiders general manager Bruno Campese and should be an easy transition for the team. But Campese said Guard is getting the promotion not for its convenience, but because he deserves it.

“To be honest with you, it is convenient but this isn’t about convenience,” said Campese. “We think he’s the right person to add to our coaching staff. He’s got a great personality and will fit in nicely with Cory (Clouston, head coach) and Dave (Manson, associate coach).

“He’s got a really rapport with the players already.”

Guard will continue to provide his services as a goaltending coach, and as a strength and conditioning coach, but will also Campese said that Guard will be in discussion with Clouston and Manson for additional responsibilities now that he’s an assistant coach.

The Hunter back from the Wild

The Minnesota Wild reassigned 19-year-old defenceman Hunter Warner to the Prince Albert Raiders. The Wild signed Warner to a three-year entry level contract on Tuesday, after the Raiders signed him to a WHL standard contract on Aug. 6.

To make room for Warner, the Raiders reassigned fellow 19-year-old defenceman Ryan Coghlan to Junior A in the BCHL. Coghlan previously played for the Cowichan Valley Capitals in 2012-2013 before beginning his WHL career with the Blades the following year. Coghlan was acquired from the Blades in  a trade last December.
