Community rallies behind law enforcement

Sep 25, 2014 | 4:59 PM

Prince Albert showed its support for police officers and peace in the community at a walk and gathering at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.

Supporters took part in the Support Our Police and Peace Officers Walk in recognition of National Police and Peace Officers Day on Thursday morning. They then attended the Celebrating Peace in Our Community event, which included a performance by a student dance group from Queen Mary Community School.

The event was organized by Sandy Pitzel, co-ordinator of Community Against Family Violence, an organization, which will be discontinued.

In her speech, she encouraged the audience to thank peace and police officers for what they do.

Mayor Greg Dionne also encouraged the public to thank law enforcement and corrections officers for their work, but spoke of the growth of big-city crime.

“At the same time, I have to congratulate our community and our young people. Because of our liaison officers in our schools, and our police visibility in our community that we’re connecting more with community and the community feeding us information that helps us.”

Being recognized for the work they do is an honour, Prince Albert Police Chief Troy Cooper told the auditorium.

“Today we’re celebrating peace, but we’ve got a long way to go in order to be violence free. We have that goal, and we can reach it together.”
