Diesel thieves siphoning fuel in Nipawin region

Sep 22, 2014 | 3:56 PM

The Nipawin RCMP is asking for the public’s help in its investigation of a string of fuel thefts in the area.

In three separate incidents, diesel fuel was siphoned. In the first incident on Aug. 8, north of the Village of Love, fuel was siphoned from a grader at the Love Gravel Pit. Tire tracks were left behind, and the RCMP believe they could have been made by a quad.

In the second incident on Aug. 22 in the Town of White Fox, suspects siphoned fuel from a semi tractor near railway tracks.

Then on Sept. 16, diesel fuel was siphoned from storage tanks in a farm yard four miles west of Nipawin on Old Highway 35. A Dodge dual-service truck and a black extended cab half ton were spotted at the scene.

The RCMP is also asking for information about two other suspicious incidents nearby.

On Aug. 30, a white Dodge truck pulled into a farm yard at night two miles west of Highway 35. Two men and a woman were asking about work. They left the area after a dog began to bark.

On Sept. 16, suspicious vehicles were seen entering a farm yard in the RM of Torch River on Highway 35. A dog belonging to the family living on the farm was discovered dead later that night. The dog had sustained a fatal head injury. According to the RCMP, it isn’t yet known if there’s a connection between the two incidents on this date. Nothing was taken in this incident.

Cpl. Wanita Minty of the Nipawin detachment said the RCMP went public with the incidents after people became concerned. She said they are trying to catch the people stealing fuel, and they are hoping to alert people and find out what is going on as well.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Nipawin RCMP at (306) 862-6270 or Saskatchewan CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
