A global event makes its way to Prince Albert

Sep 19, 2014 | 6:37 AM

Parking spaces in downtown Prince Albert will be transformed into public art installations on Friday by students at St. Mary High School.

Park(ing) Day is an annual global project which began in San Francisco in 2005. The project involves people creating temporary public spaces around the world.

Art teacher Nicole Charlebois-Rinas said that this project allows her students to be creative.

“So often in school, we’re in a desk writing, doing traditional sorts of things and this is very contemporary and connects them to the other artists in the world,” she said.

There will be 10 students participating in the event. One group will create a piece on recycling, one on community involvement and one on wealth vs. poverty.

Most of the groups will be bringing objects or props to be used or creating banners.

Charlebois-Rinas said that they will not be reserving spots ahead of time; the group will try to find spaces in a row on 10th Street by Conexus Credit Union and City Hall on Friday morning. The students will arrive at 10 a.m. to install their projects and they will be taken down by 1 p.m.

This will be Prince Albert’s first Park(ing) Day.
