UPDATE: Online pedophile sentenced to jail time

Sep 17, 2014 | 1:26 PM

A man who pleaded guilty to child pornography charges has been sentenced to 20 months in jail and three years of probation.

Sheldon Desnomie received his sentence at the Court of Queen's Bench in Prince Albert on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier this week, he admitted to possession of more than 50,000 illicit images and videos involving young boys.

He was one of 10 Saskatchewan people arrested through “Operation Snapshot,” a crackdown on online pedophiles through RCMP's Canadian Police Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Desnomie had been living in Prince Albert after moving there to act as a caregiver for a friend’s child at the time of downloading the content.

Justice R. Mills’ 20-month provincial jail and three-year probation landed between those requested by the Crown prosecutor and defence.

Crown prosecutor Shawn Blackman asked for Desnomie to spend two years in a federal institution followed by three years of probation, while defence counsel Pamela Cuelenaere asked for one year and any probation Mills deemed appropriate.

At the sentencing hearing on Monday that was adjourned, she said Desnomie was subject to mandatory minimum sentencing, which is one year for one charge and six months for another.

Desnomie will spend his life as part of the sex offender registry.

For the next 15 years his probation order prohibits him from attending any place where people under 16 are expected to be, such as a public park, school ground, or daycare centre. He can’t work in a position of authority or trust with someone under 16, nor can he contact anyone under 16 without supervision.

Finally, he cannot use the Internet or other digital network.

Brandon Mckay was another man arrested from Prince Albert through Operation Snapshot. He was sentenced to just under two years in prison.

Desnomie had been out of custody for the past two years after his arrest. Currently he resides in Regina.
