Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex begins royal tour in Moose Jaw

There are many chances for people in Saskatchewan to meet Prince Edward this week. His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex begins his three-day royal tour of Saskatchewan on Wednesday with a special stop at 15-Wing Moose Jaw Wednesday afternoon.

He is also the colonel-in-chief of the Saskatchewan Dragoons, and the public can see Prince Edward at the headquarters at 1215 Main Street North.

Jason Quilliam is chief of protocol for Saskatchewan. He explains that it is polite to address the prince as “Your Royal Highness” the first time, followed by “Sir” after that. If you choose, it's also acceptable for men to give a short bow or a curtsy by women, but Quilliam said it doesn't have to be that formal.

“They're down-to-earth folks, our royals, Canada's Royal Family. They're looking to connect to Canadian citizens and that's what we're giving His Royal Highness, in particular, the opportunity to do here,” said Quilliam.

Quilliam explained when members of the Royal Family visit Canada they are often doing the Queen's work.

“To celebrate commemorative events, to really promote our shared history and heritage,” he said.

The $60,000 tour continues in Regina on Thursday with a visit to the RCMP Academy and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award presentation at Government House.

On Friday, Prince Edward will spend half the day in Saskatoon where he will meet Chief Darcy Bear and two council members from Whitecap Dakota First Nation arriving on horseback. A monument will be unveiled, commemorating the “Spirit of Alliance” in the War of 1812. The Earl of Wessex will spend the afternoon visiting All Saints Catholic Elementary School and École Centennial School in Swift Current.

Each city stop on the royal tour includes a walkabout where the public can meet Prince Edward. People are also encouraged to take pictures and share the experience on social media using #skroyalvisit.
