New development plans have Candle Lake residents worried

The Resort Village of Candle Lake, a popular summer getaway for many people, may look a whole lot different in the next 10 years.

The Village has been approached by several developers with plans that include two new marinas and an RV park.

The plans have so far only made it to first reading. Development officer Joan Corneil said council will not look at the plans any further though until a capacity study is done. The study will look at several factors including whether the lake can handle any further development, and if it can, where the development should go.

“This capacity study is going to be a document that has been done by an independent consultant also independent of any views both political or emotional,” said Corneil.

The study was commissioned by the village council earlier this summer. Corneil said she expects it will be complete by early October.

“And that time once council has had time to review it, it will become a public document and there will be a public meeting regarding the document,” said Corneil.

A group of residents have been quite vocal about their opposition. The group feels they should be included in the study, and have gone so far as to start a petition to argue their right to a referendum on the issue.

Because this issue falls under planning and development, council has no binding responsibility to hold a referendum. According to the Municipalities Act, issues that have to do with the budget, how council spends its money or an unsightly property would be eligible for a referendum vote.

“At the end of the day, it is a council decision and they were elected by the people to make decisions in the best interest of the community.” said Corneil.

Corneil said they are not the type of council that holds their decisions behind closed doors.

There is a special council meeting scheduled for Oct. 12. Corneil reiterated that before council makes any decisions regarding the development, there will be a public presentation on the study.
