New White Butte RCMP detachment officially opens

Sep 15, 2014 | 4:47 PM

The RCMP is now closer to those they serve on the outskirts of Regina.

Members of the White Butte detachment have been stationed at the new building in Emerald Park all summer, but the bagpipes bellowed for the official opening today. Those officers used to operate out of Regina.

“It's critical that we actually have our infrastructure located in the same areas where we have a responsibility, geographically, to respond to,” said RCMP assistant commissioner Brenda Butterworth-Carr.

That geographical area entirely surrounds Regina from the communities in the RM of Edenwold in the east over to the west near the global transportation hub.

Now that White Butte RCMP is located right along Highway 1 in Emerald Park, officers are able to more quickly respond to incidences along the busy stretch of highway.

Butterworth-Carr said it's also creating a greater sense of community being close to those they serve.

“There's a lot more discussion of the community priorities. People get to know the members and conversely the members get to know the community members as well,” she said.

The new detachment accommodates the police dog service, victim services and traffic safety all in one building.
