Riot charges laid at facility for young offenders

Jul 28, 2014 | 5:21 PM

Sunday night saw quite the disturbance at a facility for young offenders who defied staff.

The Prince Albert Youth Residence houses dozens of youth who are in custody or awaiting sentencing.

It started with a disturbance complaint involving four teenage boys between the ages of 14 and 17. While Prince Albert police were on their way, the residents started damaging the facility.

“I think there’s a window broken and then some damage, to, I believe some of the walls,” Sgt. Brandon Mudry, spokesman with Prince Albert Police Service.

The boys were trying to barricade themselves in a room when police got there. Officers got the situation under control and arrested the boys.

The damage is estimated at several thousand dollars. While no one was hurt in the incident, the youth face charges that include assault of a peace officer. This is a staff member of the facility, not one of the responding police officers.

They also face charges of assault with a weapon and taking part in a riot.

“It’s taking part in an unlawful assembly in which, in turn, would mean that they’d participate in something that’s creating fear or threatening,” Mudry explained.

He added that Prince Albert police don’t often lay riot charges since those are more common in the Saskatchewan Penitentiary west of the city, which is under the RCMP’s jurisdiction.

The four teens will be back in court on July 30. They cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Enforcing the law in the downtown core

On Thursday, officers in the Criminal Investigation Division dressed in plainclothes and focused on the downtown core. They walked through several businesses and establishments in the area.

They made four arrests through this enforcement initiative. The charges are possession of a controlled substance, breach of a conditional sentence order, breach of an undertaking and breach of a recognizance.

They also issued seven tickets related to liquor and gaming offences.
