SGI pulls vehicle out of South Saskatchewan River

Jul 22, 2014 | 7:09 AM

SGI, along with a towing company and a dive team, recovered the car that went over the Circle Drive North Bridge into the South Saskatchewan last December.

The silver Acura was hoisted up to warm and sunny bridge deck Monday afternoon, a stark contrast to the -24C December day it went in.

SGI communications supervisor Jennifer Leflar said weather and availability pushed back the recovery date.

“It was one weather related and then also availability of having the services and it just happened to be (Monday),” she said.

Breanna Pegg was behind the wheel, heading east to meet her cousin for lunch in Willowgrove, when her car slipped on the ice, went up over the barricade and plunged into the river.

The 23-year-old surgical nurse wasn't distracted and hadn't had a drop to drink. She survived by kicking in her windshield, climbing onto the roof of her car and swimming to shore. She suffered a broken collar bone, along with various scratches and bruises.

The accident prompted the City of Saskatoon to promise to keep bridges, barriers and access points clear of snow and change its policy.

Before Public Works would do a visual check on city barriers and only clear the snow if it reached the height of the barrier.

Meanwhile, Leflar said Pegg's car is a total loss and will be sent to the SGI salvage centre.
