The Northern Prairie Dancers were at Carment Court this week to practice their skills.

Manager and mentor Marlene Bear said the group of teenagers can do traditional and contemporary style jigs and square dances.

“We always watch for new moves and try to do new things and it’s more to keep them occupied,” she said.

“With these guys, the faster it is the better they dance—they love it. But it’s really high energy.”

On Thursday, they are heading to the third annual Fort McKay Metis Days to compete against other groups aged 18 and older for a chance to win $7,000.

“We practice like crazy people and I’m yelling and screaming and get all crazy,” she said with a chuckle.

One of the dancers that will be competing is 18-year-old Cole Ballantyne.

“I’m really excited and kind of nervous at the same time because there’s going to be, like, at least like, 10,000 people looking at us and I think we’re doing a whole showcase for them, so ya that’s exciting.”

Ballantyne has been dancing for six years.

He was introduced to dancing in a rather unique way.

“One day, I was sitting around the house and I got a phone call from Miss Bear saying I had to go dance and I was really nervous and I said ‘no’ at first until she came into my front door and pulled me out and threw me in her vehicle and I started dancing and ever since I was here,” he said laughing as he recalled the memory.

But what’s kept him coming back was his love of dancing, the team, respect and “especially Miss Bear.”

After this competition the Northern Prairie Dancers will also be heading to Batoche to showcase their talents.

Bear said they will be doing square dances and jigging with two or three other groups for a couple days of the Back to Batoche event.
