Local Jam and Jelly sale raises money for national charities

One man in Prince Albert is making a difference one piece of toast at a time.

Charlie Squires held his Homemade Jam and Jelly Sale on the ground floor at Northcote Manor on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

He has been hosting his own jam and jelly sales for seven years.

According to him, he does it mostly as a past time.

“It’s just something to do. I preserve the jams and jelly and then I sell them for charity,” he said. “I enjoy it.”

Squires said this time around the money will go towards the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“I chose different organizations each time I do it. I have just buried a sister-in-law that has had diabetes for a number of years. I’ve had it in the family for… I hate to say how many years. Well, I lost a daughter at the age of 47 with MS,” he said, visibly emotional.

Because of this personal connection, Squires said it means a lot to him that he can donate.

“It feels great, because I’ve been a charitable gentleman all my life,” he said.

The jam and jelly sale may be at a new location some time soon as Squires said he wants to see if he can raise more money at the Gateway Mall. He said he hopes lots of people will support his cause.

“Everybody; all of PA if they’ll come,” said Squires.

The sale on Saturday was on until 4 p.m., followed by the draw of the door prize, a handmade quilt.

Squires said his sales are made possible largely because of helpful volunteers and donations.

“It’s appreciated; everything. People are so generous… they donate. We appreciate it. Without them I couldn’t do it.
