Swenson makes Lobstick finals, Klughart loses in second playoff hole

It was so close to being an all-Prince Albert final at the 2014 Conexus Men’s Lobstick in Waskesiu—a fraction of an inch, even.

That’s how close Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart was to defending his Lobstick title. In the first extra hole against Saskatoon’s Shaun Dunphy, Klughart’s birdie attempt for the win spun tantalizingly across the top of the cup—and somehow never went in. This forced a second playoff hole, which Dunphy won after a tidy close chip and tap in for par on Hole 2.

This completed an unlikely comeback as Dunphy was down two holes with two remaining, and birdied them both just to force it to extra holes.

Prince Albert’s Greg Swenson sat back after beating Saskatoon’s Taylor Afseth on Hole 18 and admitted he was wishing for the all-PA final.

“Danny really had Shaun against the ropes. I was really hoping it was going to be me and (Danny),” said Swenson. “But congrats to Shaun for his great comeback.

“I’ve actually known Shaun since I was a kid,” added Swenson. “We’ve played golf together lots and I know he’s a good player. He hits it long. He had a little trouble throughout the round, but he had a really good finish when it mattered the most—it really impressed me. I’m going to have to play well.”

Swenson has had a ton of success at the Lobstick. He’s made the finals twice in just three Lobstick tournament appearances. His last finals appearance was in 2012, losing to Cadmus Delorme after Hole 16.

“Anytime you can get into a match play final, whether it’s the Lobstick or the Northern (Men’s Amateurs), it’s a great feeling,” said Swenson. “I’m super excited to get out there and play for the championship.”

Swenson and Dunphy will duke it out Saturday at 10 a.m. for all the marbles.

Double duty

Friday was double trouble for the players, as they had to play both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches to advance to the finals on Saturday.

Swenson beat Saskatoon’s Aaron Mitchell in the quarterfinals in the morning before beating Afseth to advance to the semis.

Dunphy upset Colin Coben in the morning draw. Coben was the top-ranked golfer heading in, and won the Senior Men’s Lobstick for the fourth consecutive time last week.
