Local McDonald’s sign goes viral

Jun 4, 2014 | 11:32 AM

A sign advertising a low-priced drink deal in front of the Second Avenue West McDonald’s restaurant is attracting some unexpected attention online.

The message on the portable sign in front of the restaurant has been up since this past weekend. It says “$1 Drink Days Poor Deal Anywayz.”

Photos of the sign have gone viral over the use of the word “poor,” which for locals is commonly interchangeable with words like “great” or “awesome.”

Jan Malenfant, who owns the franchise location along with her husband, is aware of the attention it is getting on social media.

“I guess I’m shocked that it’s getting so much attention,” she said, with a laugh. “I kind of find it humourous, actually.”

She said she didn’t realize the sign would grab this much attention. “It’s PA lingo. We all talk that way – well, I know me and my husband used to talk that way growing up. So, it’s just how we talk here.”

Customers haven’t said anything about the sign, she said, but added she hopes it hasn’t offended anyone.

The message will likely come down soon, but it has nothing to do with the online reaction. Malenfant said they try to change the message on the sign every week. “I guess maybe we’ll try to come up with another PA-lingo/slang here. It’s getting so much attention.”
