Amount paid for Mosaic Stadium naming rights will not be made public

The public may never know how much the Mosaic Company paid in an extension of its naming rights agreement with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The most-recent agreement was announced the day the design of the new stadium was revealed. It ensures the new building will be known as Mosaic Stadium until 2037. What wasn't included in the announcement was how much was paid for the 20-year agreement.

The Mosaic Company has told News Talk Radio that reporting naming rights has changed and it will not be releasing the amount. The first naming rights agreement began in 2006; that 10-year agreement was worth $3.75 million.

Another question that remains is why the money paid for naming the building goes to the main tenant rather than the owner of the building. Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said an agreement was made with the Rider club several years ago that entitles them to the naming rights agreement.

“25 million dollars, which is the responsibility of the Roughriders (to contribute towards building the new stadium), has to be raised by them,” said Fougere. “We've allowed them to do naming rights as a way to get that. Whether we got the money or the Riders did, it flows to the same place which is the construction of the new building.”

However, the Roughriders also received the money paid in the previous naming agreement.

The Roughriders have launched a $40 million capital campaign seeking business partnerships and fan contributions to raise its portion of the new stadium build cost.
