POLL: Pro Life group sets for flag raising at City Hall

May 12, 2014 | 6:26 AM

Prince Albert Pro Life will be celebrating life this week by raising a flag at City Hall to mark Celebrate Life Week.

“It’s to not only call attention to the beauty and importance of respecting life of life from conception to natural death,” said Dorothy Kawula, president of the Prince Albert Pro Life Association. “It starts off a week of prayer and activities.”

Kawula said it follows a major event in Ottawa.

“This (past) weekend (was) the national march for life in Ottawa,” said Kawula. “Thousands of people have a beautiful march and candlelight vigil on Parliament Hill.”

She added they’ve been celebrating this event for almost 20 years.

As part of the celebration the group has gotten permission from the City to raise their flag at City Hall during the week.

“It’s important that as a city we acknowledge what’s important to the people of our city, and to encourage our city to be positive,” said Kawula.

She said this event helps people remember there is another option when it comes to things like abortion.

“I think so many times people just don’t have that encouragement to seek life,” said Kawula. “We don’t give people the support and the options and the encouragement to choose life instead of abortion, to choose to take care of our elderly and our handicapped.”

The group, also known as the Prince Albert Right to Life Association, has been around for a few decades, according to Kawula.

“It’s just a group of people that get together and primarily our focus is education, but we work in conjunction with Saskatchewan Pro Life Association and other groups that provide support services.”

If you’re interested in joining the Pro Life Association in their flag raising Kawula said all are welcome.

“We’ll raise the flag and have a quick celebration,” said Kawula. “Open with a prayer and it will be beautiful.”

The flag rising starts at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at City Hall.

The request to raise the flag has gone through executive committee, but hasn't officially gone through council, which is schedule for Monday night.
