Saskatoon high school in mourning after deadly crash

May 7, 2014 | 7:20 AM

The mood at Bethlehem Catholic High School in Saskatoon has been sombre as teachers and students mourn two of their classmates.

The boy and girl, both 17, were killed Monday evening when their car was T-boned by a stolen truck on 22nd Street.

“At school it was pretty depressing,” Grade 11 student Savannah Nadon said Tuesday. “Everybody was upset.”

Nadon, 16, had many classes with the female victim.

“I knew her for quite a while. Every time I would see her she would always be smiling and happy,” she said. “She was really nice to everybody. She wasn't, like, judgmental or anything.

“This is the first time that I've lost somebody that I actually, like, know. So it's kind of hard.”

The morning after two of their students were killed, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools sent four members of their tragic events response team to the affected school.

Though Savannah said she didn't meet with any of the specially-trained counsellors, superintendent of education Diane Cote said the most important job for the team is simply being there in a time of tragedy.

“More than anything it's being present more than it is conversation,” she said. “It's knowing they're not alone, that the wider school division is supporting them.”

Cote said they understand that a tragic event like Monday's fatal crash could elicit a wide variety of responses from students and staff. The response team's approach, she said, is to allow those responses to come forth, then offer support.

“Prayer is a very important component of what we offer,” Cote added, “because that's kind of one of the first places we go for comfort.”

A 16-year-old girl who was in the car with the two victims remains at Royal University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 21-year-old woman and 17-year-old girl were set to appear in front of a justice of the peace on Tuesday night. Possible charges include impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
