Melfort’s Co-op reflects on a century

Storing 100 years of archives has become a challenge for the Melfort and District Museum.

Megan Peters is the assistant curator at the Melfort museum. She said the museum still receives a lot of paper archives, but they have recently moved to a digital format.

“Due to storage space and just preservation techniques we have moved towards putting them on an online database with the Saskatchewan Archival info network,” said Peters.

Peters said having updated technology has benefitted the museum. She said the new database has helped with restoration of pictures through Photoshop.

“We’ve been able to take slides of photographs from around the 1910s and re-produce them for displays,” said Peters.

Peters said the displays help the Co-operative Association share their history and showcase how they have developed over the last 100 years.

She said despite all the perks of a new system their main challenge is the amount of time they spend adding the archives to the computer.

Peters said they have a volunteer which does the scanning, inputting of information and restoration of photos.

If you are interested in the history of the Melfort Grain Grower’s Co-operative Association, you can attend the Saskatchewan archives week at the Melfort and district museum from Feb. 2 to Feb. 8.
