Almost a million dollars up for grabs at the Northern Lights Casino

An almost $1-million prize is up for grabs at the Northern Lights Casino in Prince Albert for those that play their Smoke Signals machines.

Smoke Signals links all of the six Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority casinos in the province. They each share one prize that starts out at $250,000 and grows as people play. To win smoke signals you have to play a two bet.

This is the largest that the money pot has been in over two years.

The Smoke Signals grand prize is by far the highest jackpot at any of their casinos.

Paul Lomheim, the marketing co-ordinator at the Northern Lights Casino in Prince Albert, is confident their casino will soon be handing over the prize.

“It’s almost like a competition between the six casinos,” said Lomheim, “We want to be the one [with the person who] wins it.”

Smoke signals came to their casinos about 15 years ago, and since then the Northern Lights Casino has been pretty successful.

“We have had 15 winners. We’ve had way more than some of the other casinos. I think some have only had one or two, or even zero,” said Lomheim.

According to Lomheim, several of the past winners of the Smoke Signals grand prize have “retired” from the casinos after.

“A lot of them, after they win Smoke Signals you don’t see them again. And they just decided…that’s it. They go on a trip or do whatever they want to do I guess. When you’ve got almost a million dollars you can kind of do the things you’d like to do,” said Lomheim.

So far, the million dollar mark has never been reached. The highest prize awarded from smoke signals was $985,969 at the Painted Hand Casino in Yorkton in fall of 2011.

Besides the grand prize, there are also smaller prizes awarded from the Smoke Signals machines to players daily; even if you don’t win the million, you might not go home empty-handed.
