VIDEO: Carlton High School tackles student issues with video series

Jan 19, 2014 | 11:02 AM

High school can be rough if you don’t know how to deal with things like bullying and exclusion.

Issues like these have spurred one teacher at Carlton High School in Prince Albert to think outside of the box to help students cope.

Teacher Ian Hecht is the driving force behind the Fair Haven video series. Hecht said the series came about last year because the school was looking for ways to build empathy among its students.

“We wanted to portray some situations that students can get themselves into or that have happened to them,” said Hecht.

Hecht said they have five episodes planned and he thinks they have great potential to make a difference in high school students.

It’s too soon to know if the videos have made a direct impact on the students, according to director and drama teacher David Zulkoskey, but he is hearing feedback.

“People are talking about it and that's a good thing,” Zulkoskey said.

Grade 10 student Kaily Remenda, said being part of Fair Haven has impacted her in a very positive way.

“It kind of sets the role for me to be more like an ambassador around the school to help other students cope positively,” said Remenda.

Remenda said she thinks in the long run the series will really help give students a positive way to cope.

Zulkoskey said episode three will bring up racism and he encourages everyone to tune in.
