UPDATED: PA Carrier lumber mill to shut down, lay off workers

Jan 15, 2014 | 10:59 AM

A dozen workers at the Carrier Forest Products mill near Prince Albert will be out of a job by the end of this month.

The company is shutting down its operations at the planer mill, and focusing all of its attention on the Big River sawmill.

President Bill Kordyban told paNOW the shutdown may only be temporary. He blamed a tough summer for the shutdown, adding they just could not get caught up.

The last shift at the planer mill will be on Jan. 24.

Kordyban said the move is similar to what they have done in the past when there was a downward cycle in the industry.

Meanwhile, there remains a lot of confidence in the Big River sawmill. Between 30 and 40 people are currently working there, and more jobs may open up when a second shift starts in February. Kordyban could not provide specific details beyond that.

The planer mill has produced stud lumber. The product was being exported to other parts of the country and the United States.

Kordyban said they also had a lot of product moving to Saskatoon and Regina.
