New assisted-living home set to open doors

Prince Albert seniors will soon have another option for living accommodations.

Local man Bahram Makari and his wife are opening up a newly constructed assisted-living home, Mak Lodge, in the new year.

“We started the constructed almost a year ago, so the first wing is going to be ready January 1st, people are moving in and then the second wing will be ready a month after that,” Makari said.

He said in the centre of the two wings there will be a living room, dining room and activities room.

The two wings in the privately-funded facility is Phase 1 of the building and include 24 spaces.

“In a couple of years we’re hoping to have Phase 2 of the same building kind of, and that would be a senior’s home,” he said, which is geared to seniors who need more attention.

Makari has lived in Prince Albert for the past 31 years and building an assisted living home has been on his mind for a while.

“Almost 20 years ago I was thinking of this assisted living and each time some other opportunity would come up [and] finally we decided to go ahead with it,” he said.

Makari said he feels this will be a good endeavour as many people have already expressed interest. There are only four spots left in Phase 1.

“Really there is lots of interest; people are really happy and everybody is saying PA needs more of these and, well, we are happy,” he said.

Some of the services Mak Lodge will provide include meals, laundry, exercise and other activities. “The only thing is they would have [to] take care of themselves in their room. Each room would have their own washroom facilities, showers; everything.”

Mak Lodge is located at 1601 First Street East. The doors will open Jan. 1, 2014.
