Avoid Eye Area

Aug 28, 2013 | 4:54 PM

You read these three little words – Avoid Eye Area – on the back of a skincare bottle. Why? Will it burn?

There are some cosmetic ingredients that do not benefit the eye area, even if they have a positive effect on the rest of the face. The eye area, other than your lips, has the thinnest skin on the face. Our goal is to strengthen it so it looks its firmest and youngest.

Retinol is an industry favorite. It encourages cellular turnover. Used at night time, by morning, skin looks radiant and bright. It’s part of the plan of attack on aging skin and pigmentation irregularities.

Yet, it’s not a friend to the eye area.

Glycolic acid is a very common skincare ingredient – too common, in my professional opinion. Definitely avoid this in the eye area. And while you’re at it, reduce your use of it for the rest of your face. Glycolic acid is an exfoliant. Used excessively, it can thin the skin.

The eye area loves vitamin C, peptides, vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Look for these ingredients in a serum or eye crème.

Where is the eye area anyway? Place your index finger right beside your outer eye, with your fingertip pointed at your hairline. Now, place your index finger directly under your eye, pointed at your nose. Add the space between your eyebrow and eye. These 3 little chunks constitute the famous ‘eye area’.
Feel free to put your eye crème all through here. Don’t bother with your actual eyelid. Stuff applied there can migrate into the eye. Your eyelid will benefit plenty from the product you apply right above it, directly under the eyebrow.

If you ever feel a stinging or burning sensation on the skin in the eye area, splash the product off with cool water and either chuck it or use it up on your legs and arms. Tingle is good, burn and sting is bad.
