We’re Back! A Geek Blogger’s Story

Jul 17, 2013 | 3:58 PM

We’re back (by popular demand) after an extremely long hiatus, I do apologize and I’ve missed you all…all one of you that reads this blog.

By the way anyone who got the movie reference I made in this title..you are pure awesome.

So I’ll jump right into it, Paranormal Activity fans (you know you’re out there).

Looks like the fan favourite franchise has been official bumped.

Despite reports from producer Jason Blum that the film would run in the series regular October (close to Halloween) slot, Paramount has now pulled the plug on the Halloween release to make room for (of all things) a Jackass…wait for it…spinoff.

Seriously Paramount?

Anyways despite that head shaking decision fans of PA will be glad to know it has not been moved far off the mark. The 5th installment is now set for release for January 3rd 2014.

But what’s that? I hear you saying ‘well James, what the hell is going on with the Latino-themed spinoff?’ or maybe it’s just the voices in my head which have for some reason decided to take a break from constantly telling me to burn things.

Well either way there are some mixed reports on this right now.

Some are reporting that Paramount has announced it will move the spinoff to January as well, however a few sites are claiming that project might get the theoretical axe from Paramount.

Personally to me it doesn’t make sense to run the two so close to each other.

Yes they are two completely different films but they are both in the Paranormal Activity universe. That’s like running Thor 2 and Captain America 2 at the same time.

I hear the fan boys and girls going oh please PLEASE do that…it’s not happening people and why? Money, money, money.

Production companies want to milk the cash cow on box office night and if you run two movies that are of the same vein in the same night, week or even month, one is going to lose box office bucks.

So we’ll have to keep the ear to the ground for now, but chin up, your beloved main storyline movie IS happening in January.
Speaking of movie news mix-ups, what the hell is going on with the Spider-man news stories?

First we’ve got Mary Jane, then we don’t, then the Sinister Six are appearing fully in the second movie, and then they’re not. Now we’ve got news that hottie Felicity Jones who some thought would be playing Felicia Harding (a.k.a. Black Cat), is now confirming she will be playing the girlfriend of Harry Osborne (confirmed to be played by Chronicle villain Dane DeHann and also confirmed to be the Green Goblin).

And a surprising statement from Jones has many geeks speculating fully on her character:

“(I’ll be) the Goblin’s girlfriend. I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.”

By accomplice many have assumed Harry Osborne and also have made the speculation that Jones might be playing Amazing Spider-man villain ‘Menace’.

Menace was created in 2007 as part of the newer Amazing Spider-man series as Harry’s girlfriend who discovers his secret lab and accidentally is dosed with the goblin serum.

Menace is psychotic, a murderer and plain out evil. Menace is definitely a fantastic fit for the Spider-man reboot series.

However the concern is once again piling too many villains into one movie.

We only have just over 2 hours to watch this business, and you can’t fit four origin stories into one movie, as we already have Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and possibly the emergence of the Green Goblin in the form of Harry Osborne (Dane DeHann). So to add Menace to this along with her origin story may be too much.

However Sony has signed on for Amazing Spider-man 3 and 4, so Webb could be setting us up for some future story arcs now (which would actually be brilliant).

All I know is I want Venom, and I keep seeing teasers for him and since Norman Osborne is not going to be the Green Goblin then he should become Venom in the way that Harry became Venom in the Ultimate Spider-man series and that is by putting on the symbiote suit created by Peter’s dead father in Oscorp.

Wow that was a mouthful.

Whatever happens I think this is going to pack one hell of a punch for Spider-man fans and maybe even newbs who want to check it out.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release May 2, 2014 and I will be planted firmly in the theater seat that night.

Can we just look at 2014 quick? I mean yeah 2015 is a major year for movies, but it seems like production companies are getting impatient and taking advantage of the pre-Star Wars release year.

Man of Steel 2 already being fast-tracked for a release in winter of 2014, as I mentioned above Spider-man 2 and Paranormal Activity 5, The Seventh Son, Robocop Reboot, The LEGO Movie (looks hilarious btw, never thought I’d say that), The Maze Runner (happy to see that actor Dylan O’Brien who plays Stiles in the Teen Wolf series will be the main character in that), 300: Rise of an Empire, Need For Speed, Noah, Muppets Most Wanted, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Transcendence, Godzilla Reboot, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Ninja Turtles, 21 Jump Street 2, How To Train Your Dragon 2, Transformers 4, Fast Seven, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hercules (with the Rock), Guardians of the Galaxy, Fifty Shades of Grey (I’m not seeing this but I know it will be a box office hit), Dracula Reboot, The Expendables 3, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Resident Evil 6, Stretch Armstrong, The Boxtrolls, Guillermo Del Toro’s Book of Life, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Big Hero 6 (Marvel comic made by Pixar, the first Marvel movie made fully as an animation), Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Tomorrowland (Based on the Disney theme park), The Hobbit: There and Back Again, Despicable Me Minions, Poltergeist Reboot, The Flash, Jumanji Reboot, Spongebob Squarepants 2, Dumb and Dumber To, The Toxic Avenger Reboot, Gone Girl (fantastic book, and I love all of Gillian Flynn’s work), Dark Places (Gillian Flynn again), Pinocchio (With Robert D playing both Pinocchio and Japetto), Voltron: Defenders of the Universe (everyone who saw the Cloverfield trailer for the first time and thought it was Voltron rejoice!), Splinter Cell, Phineas and Ferb, and Night at the Museum 3: Brother From Another Mother

Just look at that list and think, these are all coming out in the span of one freaking year. ONE YEAR! And I haven’t even added the newer standalones that may see some box office success which I can’t speculate on because I haven’t heard much about them yet.

Seriously, this is nuts, and setting us up for an even crazier year of releases in 2015.

I’ll provide some youtube fun later, for now just chew on this and I’ll be back again next week.
