Largest triathlon in Saskatchewan history heads to Saskatoon

Jun 29, 2013 | 11:41 AM

The Subaru Western Triathlon is making its first stop in Saskatoon on Sunday.

“We work really hard to choose venues that are beautiful places to race,” said Rachel Macatee with the triathlon, adding how Saskatoon was an easy choice.

It will be the largest triathlon ever held in the history of Saskatchewan with over 700 participants in different events and 500 triathletes set to race.

“They will swim out at Pike Lake and then end up biking into the city through all the country roads,” she said.

“And then head down to River Landing. It's going to be such a spectacular site down there.”

The triathlon will bring in world class athletes to race including two-time olympian Brent McMahon and two-time Ironman podium finisher Magali Tisseyre.

Macatee said the McMahon and Tisseyre will be facing off in “The Chase”.

“How it works is that the pro women start at a designated time ahead of the pro men,” she said.

“Then the pro men try to chase them down and overtake them.”

McMahon and Tisseyre have won the event on previous occasions and will be racing head to head for this year's title.

The race is set to Finish at River landing but Macatee says if water is in the way they have a backup plan.

“We just will change how we build our site,” she said.

“It's still going to be a real cool venue no matter what.”
