Queen Mary Community School turns 100

May 20, 2013 | 12:40 PM

Queen Mary Community School in Prince Albert is hitting a mile stone; the school turns 100-years-old this month.

Mark Hastings, principal at Queen Mary, said they have a lot of festivities planned for the end of May.

Things start off with an assembly for the students at 1 p.m. on May 31 and there will be some special guests and community partners in attendance.

“From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the evening we have a 100th anniversary family picnic where we’re having everybody come back, we’ve got really good food, lots of games for the kids. We’ve got cotton candy, animal balloons, we’ve got sumo wrestling, we have all kinds of games, things for the kids to do,” Hastings said.

“We’re going to tour people through our school and through the library where we have all of our artifacts and old year books and a whole bunch of pictures and things over the last 100 years.”

The following morning on June 1 they will also be hosting a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. where they will have some musical entertainment and those in attendance can go through the tour of the school as well.

Hastings said it will be a great two days for the school.

Artifacts on display and a little history about Queen Mary Community School

“We’ve got some backboards that we’ve made up and we’ve got things from the early 1912-1913 era. We’ve got pictures of the school when it was burning in 1980 and we’ve got the new school. We’ve got lots of activities that kids have done throughout the 100-years at Queen Mary Community School,” Hastings said.

In 1980 Queen Mary burnt down, it was re-built and started up again in 1982.

One thing that Hastings was very proud of is the fact that Queen Mary, in 100-years, has only had seven principals with Hastings being the seventh one.

“It feels pretty special, it’s an honor to be here to realize that there’s only been six other people that have been principal over the previous 98-years. It’s been really good; we’ve got lots of community support and lots of really good kids and we want to have a really good weekend out of it,” he said.
