Why do I Relay for Life?

Apr 10, 2013 | 9:34 AM

People often ask, why do you get involved with Relay for Life? My answer is simple. Cancer robs life from so many people each and every year. Just this week I learned of someone I know whose spouse is fighting the battle against cancer. Life is so precious that the moments we treasure are never long enough when the clock is ticking as we are fighting cancer. Relay gives me an opportunity to help the community but take 12 hours from my day to remember thousands of people who fought and didn’t win. But maybe this year Relay will open one more door in the fight. Maybe Relay will provide a family with many more happy days because research found a cure to their cancer. Maybe Relay will educate the community to eat smart, exercise more and live life to prevent cancer.

Relay for Life is more than just a 12 hour walk that will raise thousands of dollars June 7 in Prince Albert. Relay is family, friends, co-workers and people you don’t even know taking up the challenge to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back against cancer. It takes but one person to begin the dream of one day our world being cancer free. It needs two people to make some calls and find eight friends to form a Relay for Life team. It takes a committee of friends to meet all winter to organize, plan and execute the biggest single fundraiser for the Cancer Society. But it takes you the community to cheer, share and even cry all in support of the hundreds of people who will be part of Prince Albert’s Relay for Life event June 7.

Why will you want to join Relay for Life 2013? It is so easy to get involved as a participant, survivor, and volunteer or even as a donor. Visit www.relayforlife.ca and follow the links to the Prince Albert event. Like us on Face Book or call Charlene at 306-764-4808. Prince Albert’s Relay is June 7 – get involved, register a team today!

Already 22 teams have signed up. That’s 220 people who are willing to walk for 12 hours to have fun, share stories, be educated and be challenged to fight back against cancer. These teams and many more will be out in the community to raise some money in support of the event. While this is a fun event it is also a fundraiser. Where do your dollars go? Donor dollars fund research, research right here in Saskatchewan at the University of Saskatchewan. Dollars fund educational programs to tell people about Cancer and ways to prevent Cancer. Dollars fund programs that assist people living with Cancer from little things like the cancer information line to family programs or other support programs. But we want to encourage many more teams to sign up. All it takes is you and 9 friends, a team of 10. Co-workers, your hockey team members, your ball team, friends down the block, just get them involved. $10.00 each registers your team and you are set for an evening you soon will not forget. Call Charlene at 306-764-4808 and register your team today!
