FSIN Youth Treaty Summit educates students in PA

Mar 29, 2013 | 12:04 PM

More than 300 Saskatchewan students were in attendance at the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Youth Treaty Summit on Thursday.

The event featured speakers such as FSIN Senator Sol Sanderson, past youth FSIN representative, Evan Chamakese and FSIN Bold Eagle co-ordinator Lyndon Linklater.

Kimberly Jonathan, First Vice-Chief of the FSIN, was pleased with the turnout on Thursday and the response from the youth.

“We’ve heard today that the youth screaming, they want to learn about the treaties, they want a forum such as the summit to discuss the treaties, to listen to the elders, to the leadership and to each other. That’s really important.” Jonathan said on Thursday.

“The youth teach us a lot as leaders. The youth teach each other a lot.”

The event was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert. First Nations and non-First Nations youth and elders were invited to attend at no cost.

This was the first event of its kind to take place. Talk of a second event in the coming year is in the air.

Leaders, such as Jonathan, who attended the event, saw the need for further education for the youth to learn more about the treaties.

“The main purpose of the event is to educate and to get excited about understanding and learning about the treaties,” she said.

Jonathan added she had heard previously, students call the treaties boring and ‘of yesterday.’

She said this event was the perfect opportunity to provide excitement and learning, as well as bring the youth, elders and leaders together.

Tenesha Sanderson, a student at St. Francis School from Sturgeon Lake, was in attendance of the event and benefited from the whole experience.

“I learned about the treaties, learned more about my culture, and trying to learn some of my language that I didn’t know before, and some stories from the past,” Sanderson said.

The event wrapped up with musical entertainment from guests DJ Creesian, Adam Jack and Joey Stylez.
