Standing Buffalo swears in new chief and council

Members of the Standing Buffalo Dokota First Nation may have a new band chief and council.

Roberta Sooyewaste was sworn in this weekend after Saturday's controversial election which was held several months in advance due to allegations of corruption against Chief Rodger Redman and five council members.

Redman and the councilors were impeached for allocating more than $1 million for honorariums, travel, meetings and advances.

At the same time, council was imposing a 10 per cent cut to all reserve services.

The sixth councillor, Stella Isnana, was the one who blew the whistle and was the only councilor not impeached.

Redman had called the impeachment and election illegal, saying the band’s senate committee did not follow proper procedure. If the election is ruled illegal, the results will not stand.

Of the 10 council candidates, Isnana was the only former councillor running for re-election. She was re-elected.

According to Isnana, the other elected councilors are Sooyewaste’s son Mitchell, Gloria Moostoos, Minnie Rider, Ricky Redman and Marcella Yuzicippi.
