Bulk Cheese Warehouse coming to PA

Mar 11, 2013 | 6:05 AM

Saskatoon’s Bulk Cheese Warehouse is a destination store for many different reasons to a wide variety of people.

Mainly people are drawn to the store because of their wide variety of cheeses, smoke house and meat selection.

Owner Scott Bartlett is now expanding his store into Prince Albert, which he considers his home.

“We have a very big Prince Albert customer base at our Saskatoon store, which is [one] reason why we’d like to have a store in PA because we know how big our customer base is there,” he said.

“I’ve kind of been watching Second Avenue [in Prince Albert] for a few years now … We really like the spot we have, it’s kind of at the crossroads of the community.”

The shop will be located in the old OK Tire building next to Tim Horton’s on 16th Street West and Second Avenue.

Now that city council has approved Bartlett’s business permit he can begin renovating the space.

“We’re just getting ready to start construction. We mostly just need to take the floor out, put a new floor … put all of our plumbing in and stuff for our coolers and wiring and then pour a new floor in,” he explained.

After renovations the shop will be larger than their Saskatoon location and Bartlett said this will help them serve more customers.

“Prince Albert will be a little different [than Saskatoon] in that we’ll have more room to expand our meat department. In Saskatoon we’re quite limited by space and no real place to grow. In Prince Albert we will have a larger meat department … a lot more freezer [space] so we can have a box program, where if you want to get a five pound box of burgers or something like that you can,” Bartlett said.

When the shop does open it will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., which will allow him to hire about 20 full-time and part-time workers.

He said it’s still a bit too soon to do any hiring, but once they have an idea of when the store will be opening he will start looking for employees.

“I want to wait until I’m actually know when I’ll be at the location everyday, so that people can come down or drop off resumes or that sort of thing,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett is hoping to have the Bulk Cheese Warehouse in Prince Albert opened by the May long-weekend.
