Roughriders land George Cortez as Offensive Co-ordinator

Jan 21, 2013 | 11:13 AM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have landed one of the best offensive minds in the Canadian Football League.

George Cortez has been hired as the team's Offensive Coordinator after one season as the head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Despite Hamilton's poor record last season the problem was not the offense. Tiger-Cat quarterback Henry Burris led the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

The Tiger-Cats also led the league in points scored and were second in total yards.

Cortez has won four Grey Cups in his time as an assistant in the league, his latest was in 2008 when he was an assistant with current Riders Head Coach Corey Chamblin with the Calgary Stampeders.

In 2010 and 2011 he served as quarterback's coach with the Buffalo Bills.

This is Cortez' second tour of duty with the Riders. He was the team's offensive line coach in 2006.

Bob Dyce, who served as offensive coordinator last season, will remain with the team in another capacity.

Riders quarterback Darian Durant (@dariandurant) tweeted his reaction following Cortez' announcement, “Looking forward to working with someone who has coached legends…now June gotta hurry up n get here!! #RiderNation”
